Convert Decimal to Fraction

Convert decimal to fraction: All decimal numbers can be expressed as a fraction. Decimal to fraction conversion is usually a three step operation.

  • Step 1: Write the decimal without the decimal point as the numerator of the fraction.
  • Step 2: Write the denominator of the fractionby inserting as many zeroes on the right of 1 as the number of decimal places in the given decimals.
  • Step 3: Simplify the fraction and write the fraction in lowest term.
  • Example: Convert 0.75 to a fraction

    Solution:

    Step 1: Write down 0.75 divided by 1:  large frac{0.75}{1}

    Step 2: Multiply both top and bottom by 100 (because there are 2 digits after the decimal point so that is 10×10=100)

                large frac{0.75*100}{1*100}=frac{75}{100}

    Step 3: Simplify the fraction

                large frac{75}{100}=frac{75div5}{100div5}=frac{15}{20}=frac{15div5}{20div5}=frac{3}{4}

    Note: 75/100 is called a decimal fraction and 3/4 is called a common fraction.
